Substance Abuse
Therapy for substance abuse focuses on triggers, cravings, relapse prevention, and the underlying reasons behind substance use.
Individuals abuse substances for a wide variety of reasons. Substance abuse often negatively impacts, and sometimes ruins, individuals’ relationships, careers, and overall well-being. Many substances can bring on tolerance and withdrawal effects that range from depression and anxiety to seizures, hallucinations, overdose, and death.
Many individuals who abuse substances believe that they can stop using drugs on their own, but the majority of those who try to do so do not succeed without treatment intervention. Individuals tend to be more successful with their recovery if they are highly motivated to be in treatment and if they are actively engaged in their recovery.
Individuals who participate in therapy for substance abuse can learn how to cope with triggers of substance abuse, triggers of relapse, and ways to cope with cravings and avoid relapse. Therapy can also help individuals to understand underlying reasons for their substance abuse and alternate coping skills.
